Piece 07 — Sanctum of Stars
Origin Date: 12-31-2021
The Meaning: The year ends tonight. In 2021, my New Years Resolution was to do 183 Activities - Something I’d never done before every 2 days. Coming out of the pandemic, that year-long journey was the most invigorating, bold, and consistent thing I’d ever done. Creating this piece was Activity 156/183, the last one I ever completed. While I never reached my goal of Activity 183/183, this piece represents a keystone event in my life. The Dawn of a New Chapter - a profoundly adventurous one.
The Story: This is based off a photo I shot in a real tree cave… Activity 57/183 & Activity 58/183 involved a road trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks with my mom. Nearby the General Grant Tree, at the farthest depths of the trails, lies a massive, hollowed sequoia tree. Forged in fire, the bark is smooth, black, burnt. You can slide through it, snow falls through it, and it feels like a magical citadel. One of nature’s giants fallen, transformed into a hollowed grand cave.
